About the hall
A place for all people, to express all of themselves.
-
Seated capacity: 100 people at round tables
Standing capacity: 150 people
Add a dance floor and a head table and figure closer to 80 people seated. Tell us your headcount and we’ll tell you what fits.
-
1,884 square feet
Open floor, no columns through the middle. Glistening concrete floors, four cedar handmade doors, exposed trusses, and a wall of windows that runs the length of the room and catches the whole West Texas sunset.
The Hall is a blank room on purpose. Whatever you’re picturing, it will hold it. -
The original People’s Hall was built in Ercildoun, Pennsylvania, in 1845 — a year after a pro-slavery mob burned Pennsylvania Hall to the ground. Citizens pooled their own money and put up a building, so abolitionists would have somewhere to meet undisturbed. It became a stop on the Underground Railroad, and over the next 180 years it served as a meeting hall, a schoolhouse, a Grange, a polling place, and a museum. It was restored and reopened in 2025. It still stands.
The People’s Hall in Abilene is built in homage to this legacy. This Plaza is 4.5 acres of what used to be a dilapidated commercial strip on South Willis, on lands that were — and in ways beyond words still is — Comanche, Kiowa, and Jumano. Over eight years we hauled out 700,000 pounds of roof waste and rebuilt 50,000 square feet of interior.
When construction began, the Hall was the place with the gravest destruction from roof damage. We cleared the mess, and the community immediately began to gather there. Events for local art were first, then ceremonies for communities without a home, then organizing for local movements, and then a donation based, weekly yoga, which has continued for several years. What followed was an organic transformation. As more and more gathered in the space for their most cherished moments, the space became more reverent and sacred for many.
A place for all people, to express all of themselves. That is what the Hall is for.

event space
liberty lounge
Where the Hall is a blank room you make into anything, the Lounge is already dressed. Deep couches, a long communal table or a dozen individual tables surrounded by beautiful chairs, a pool table, a bar, stunning art on the walls, and a ceiling full of lanterns.
Book it when you want people to sink in and stay: receptions and after-parties, birthdays, listening sessions, game nights, workshops, showers, film shoots, and any meeting that goes better on a couch than in a chair.
-
Seated capacity: 100
Standing capacity: 125
-
1,760 square feet.
The Lounge is darker and moodier than the Hall. Often for a music, food and hang vibe, while the Hall can be more formal.
-
Pool table
A bar
18 chairs
12 café tables
8 lounge seats
5 bar stools
3 couches
It comes as you see it — you don’t have to furnish anything, and you don’t have to move anything either.
The Lounge will become our café in the future, and we will honor all bookings as an event space after it does.

the plaza
-
1290 S Willis St, Abilene, TX 79605
The Hall and the Lounge are both inside The People’s Plaza — 80+ businesses, studios, and organizations under one roof, including the People’s Gallery, a community library, salons, art studios, and makers of many mediums. Your guests have plenty of space to explore between courses.
-
More than a hundred spaces are in our own lot — part the public areas are rebuilding. Accessible spaces by the doors. No permit, no meter, no valet to arrange. Tell your guests to just pull in.
-
Step-free access from the parking lot all the way to the floor of either room. Wide doorways, and open floors with no steps or level changes inside.
If you need something we haven’t listed — seating adjustments, a quiet room, interpreter placement, a stage — ask. We’d rather work it out ahead of time than have you find out at the door.
-
2 restrooms, both of them ADA accessible. Stocked and cleaned before you arrive.
-
A prep kitchen is available in both spaces, with refrigeration, a 3 part sink, and counter space. Built for a caterer to stage out of rather than to cook a full meal from scratch.
-
Ask about:
Event promotion
Photography & lighting
DJ
Photobooth
Catering / Coffee service
Most of these are people who work out of this building. We’ll hand you names we’ve watched work in these rooms — no kickbacks, no exclusive list. You’re free to bring your own.
-
Nearby: Check out Mezamin Coffee, Grain Theory and the Pour Haus.
The newest hotel in Abilene is the Doubletree, about 10 minutes out.
what’s included:
Every rental includes the room, and a site manager available to show you the space.
-
Someone from the Plaza will be here to show you the space. They’ll be sure you are let in, show you where the lights and the thermostat live, as well as the tables, chairs and any other needs. They’re not your event coordinator — but they know this building better than anyone, and are available to answer any questions.
-
Furniture & Setup:
Tell us what you need for the room and we’ll be sure it’s ready when you get here.Send a sketch, a Pinterest board, or a sentence. Setup is included; we just need it 7 days ahead.
-
Wi-Fi throughout.
We can work with a rental company for speakers, a screen and or a projector. Tell us what you’re plugging in and test it before your date — nobody should be troubleshooting a cable while a hundred people watch.
-
Central heat and air that keeps up. A West Texas August in rooms this size is a real test and these pass it. The site manager sets it before you arrive; tell us if you like it colder.
-

House rules & faq
Short version: treat the room like it’s yours, and leave it like you found it.
Most questions land in one of the drawers below. If yours isn’t here, email hithere@thepeoplesplaza.com or call (325) 660-5752. A person answers, usually the same day.

Move what you need to. In the Hall, the tables and chairs are yours to arrange and the site manager will help. In the Lounge, ask before moving the big pieces — some of it is heavier than it looks and the room is laid out the way it is for a reason.
What we ask in both: nothing on the walls that leaves a mark — no nails, screws, staples, or heavy tape. Command strips and freestanding décor are fine. Candles should be enclosed or closely monitored. No loose glitter indoors. Everything you brought in goes home with you that night unless we’ve agreed otherwise.
-
We hold what’s left behind for 30 days. Email hithere@thepeoplesplaza.com with a description and we’ll go look.
Valuables — phones, wallets, keys, rings — go straight into the office safe.
Unclaimed items are donated after 30 days.
-
Yes, come see it. Tours run daily by appointment — book online or call (325) 660-5752. Plan on about 30 minutes, and bring your rough date and guest count. Ask to see both rooms; people often arrive picturing one and book both.
Location scouts and production teams: same booking link. Tell us what you’re shooting and we’ll have [the floor plan, power specs, and load-in details] ready. Between the two rooms and the rest of the Plaza, the building has more capacity than most people expect.
policies / terms & conditions
-
Both rooms book seven days a week, 8:00 AM to midnight.
Minimum lead time is 14 days — anything sooner, call and we’ll see what we can do.
We hold 2 hours between bookings for turnover, so your access window is exactly what’s on your contract.
Closed Thanksgiving, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Day.
The First Fridays of each month are booked for Plaza programming.
Anything unavailable shows that way on the booking calendar.
-
Setup and teardown happen inside your booked hours, not on either side of them. If you need the room at 9 AM for a 2 PM wedding, book the all-day.
Vendors load in when your window opens. Everything you brought needs to be out by your end time.
-
Balance is due 15 days before your event.
90+ days out — deposit refunded in full.
30–89 days — half the deposit refunded.
Under 30 days — deposit is non-refundable, but we’ll move it to a new date within 12 months if you rebook within 30 days.
Under 7 days or no-show — deposit and paid balance are non-refundable.
If something serious happens — illness, weather, a death in the family — call us. We’re people and we want to support all yall.
-
$100 per hour in the Hall and the Lounge, billed in full-hour increments to the card on file. If you’re still going at your end time, the site manager will tell you once, and then the clock starts.
The midnight sound cutoff is extendable for a premium, but we cannot guarantee the response from your neighbors.
-
Event insurance is required for [weddings, events over [000] guests, and any event serving alcohol].
[$1,000,000] general liability, with The People’s Plaza named as additional insured. A one-day policy typically runs [$100–$200] — [Eventsured, WedSafe, and The Event Helper] sell them online in a few minutes.
Send the certificate at least [7 days] before your date.
-
No smoking or vaping indoors.
No open flame — candles must be fully enclosed or closely monitored.
No pyrotechnics, or sparklers indoors.
Nothing nailed, screwed, or stapled into walls, and no adhesive that doesn’t come off clean.
No hanging anything heavy from the trusses.
Occupancy is capped at 150 in the Hall and 100 in the Lounge by fire code, and we don’t bend on it.
-
You can serve alcohol. It has to be poured by a TABC-certified bartender — ours or a licensed one you bring.
No self-service, and no one under 21 behind the bar.
Hosted (free) bars don’t require a permit. Selling drinks does, and that permit is yours to pull.
Service stops 30 minutes before your end time.
The Lounge bar is available to book for your bartender to work from — it does not come stocked.
-
Amplified sound ends at midnight, hard stop, per City of Abilene ordinance.
Doors and windows stay closed after 10 PM when there’s live music. We’d rather remind you at 11:45 than have a neighbor call the city.
-
Standard cleaning is included — floors and restrooms are ours.
What we ask is that you take out what you brought in: décor, food, drinks, gifts, trash and anything left in the kitchen.
-
Your deposit covers the $200 - $700 worth of damage, depending on your rental. Anything beyond that is itemized and photographed, and we will send it to you.
We’re not looking for reasons to keep your money. Most deposits come back in full within 10 business days.
Tours daily by appointment — ask to see both rooms.
